Glam sham 24X7

July 24, 2006

You just watch news and read news papers to get news. What’s happening around in the world. At least that’s what I thought! Till recently… After a hiatus due to my shifting places, it is only six months since I have made a regular habit of reading paper in Pune. First it used to be TOI.. I was aghast with the news, they thought was headlines. When the MMS scandal was all around, TOI decided to give a la TV channel performance. They showed the photo clippings of the alleged MMS in headlines! Whoa!! Who said India lags behind in sex education? Here it was in altogether different package.

After that , I never recovered from the headlines that made to the front page.. Aishwarya Rai AB match-mismatch was all page 1 material. There kundali not matching is the worry of the entire media. The wardrobe malfunction, was a huge hit… To quote one of the more prominent personalities of TOI, Ms.Mallika Sherawat, “Sex and Sharukh sell” ,only it is not just Sharukh but cinema and bloodshed. Then I changed papers, to the more familiar Indian Express… Now I realised that the papers were not the problem, entire journalism seemed to have taken a upside down, in the six months I was isolated..All I could think of as Page 3 tabloid material, was headlines. People who couldnt be in Mikha’s party where he kissed Rakhee and “outraged her modesty” saw it scene by scene in papers.

Clip 1- her peck
Clip 2- His smooch
Clip 3- Her rage 🙂

Then, there was HARSHA BOGLE, covering Football (I thought he was a cricket commentator?!!! Is there such a paucity for football commentators from India. At least players?) and Rajdeep Sardesai, talking about CNN IBN’s reach while supposedly covering Mumbai blast!!! Well !! this is TV media!! And that is why it is less excusable as that is supposedly LIVE!!

The latest, a boy was in pit for 2 days.Indeed a serious issue.. so why are the number of media ppl and politicians more than the fire fighters and rescue teams? and what is the point in broadcasting the boy’s trauma live through a CCTV..I felt intimidated.. Poor kid celebrating his sixth bday down there must have been scared out of his wits.. no wonder he was looking at the world so dazed… Well, this is show business!! If only you can forgive the fact that they were supposed to be NEWS channels.. 😀

Sorry Fiery! I disagree! Had the tv channels not been there thousands of those trapped in mumbai blasts wudnt be smsing the news channels..which in turn actually CALMed the city/country to a certain extent…secondly a 50 ft feet pit scares a 6 yr kid less than the tv camers!!!???

u shud be kidding!! Blive me had probably there been no media coverage the pits wud bee deeper and prince wud still be drning water inside the Pit!!!

Then of course its a show its a business!!! wat is not a business????when people make a business out of charities and ngo’s which r suppose to be philanthrophic…y not a business based news channel doing some indirect philanthrophic work ???????
Well..if it really hurts to see bloodshed..accident…brken lims..dead bodies on TV ..MOVE TO THE NEXT CHANNEL!!!

    AS SIMPLE AS THAT!!! 🙂

emukhi.. i know media’s importance, but there is a difference between stating the facts and sensationalising the whole issue.. for the boy, the media didnt harm him yes.. but how many rescues will they cover like this…. next will it be a kitten being rescued from a tree?? this is all news tactics.. reporting the boy issue is okay.. live coverage?

Ms.Fiery…Tell me whose mistake is to leave a PIT of 50 ft open????????? nobody’s rite ???tell me whetehr this issue wud hv been brought to life…had there been ‘no live coverage’? nope not at all…u being a sports fan wud understand the interest lost when it comes to replay of a match when compared to a live one!!
Tell me one disadvantage of giving a live show on this issue…? assume i agree it s senasationlizing!
without the media DU THINK THE ARMY WUD HV BEEN DEPLOYED AS SOON AS IT WS DONE ??? NO!!

And last of all are dilip sardesai prannoy roy…ur relatives ? 😉 they broadcast these bcoz they dunt hv any other improtant news ma !!! of course it has its advantages..which we r arguing about!!!

the point is not the issue being brought alive.. it is getting a boy rescued.. and firemen do it just as fine… they dont have any news so they create hype about news… replay and live match !! are you comparing life with sports mukhi? You can create awareness about bad roads.. bad govt.. political shams, accepted.. not about a boy getting caught in a pit.. it is a problem yes not something that needs nation wide coverage.. it is a valuable thing his life.. accepted not a means of filling time… disadvantages of live show.. waste of prime time news.. I cannot make you agree, mukhi, but for me news is stating whats happening.. boy rescued from pit is headlines.. not PRINCE ATLAST SAVED …

Hey ice: Be cool!!!the point is u cannot just shrug off the role of the media in the incidents that recently happened…i mean this is a grat awareness to children of prince’s age…dunt u think so ????
of course it can be killing of time if u watch all thru the day..which i am sure most of us are not doing….and to answer ur point on firemen…its not that easy to get attention from them u see..and finally hope u know that the army was called for only aftert the state authorities came to know of the issue…which cudnt hv happended woithout the media???

cud it hv? cn a poor litlle lady gt the attn of the govt like that ? or cn she call the army to save her child?

its not abt u and me…but pls forgive th media..after all they r not doing so badly!!!

Well talking of page3 tabloids…it has made one of the largest news empires…dont forget…and there are people who have been reading this for years…u being born in 1980’s …might hav no idea…well only after u went thru tht article did u post this blog rite?????

newspapers hav to run their business too…okay? and always any media has both sides…its the people who r using the same…who hv to be discerning…choice is yours…:)

u hv got the right perspective of looking at things. keep it up.
sensationalism is excess salt in the dessert of subject-matter journalism.

    i agree. keep blogging.

Unfortunate Fiery ice! Its easy to criticize the media as nowadays evrybody is! and dont criticize the Newspapers in this issue..u notice properly the Hindus the express’s the times of india have changed just under 10 % for over decades now…probably their supplements have changed according to the order of the day!
Newspapers are the only thing that the oldies bleive has still not changed to this ‘so called modern culture of the new gen’.so dunt nail the papers ..if not hail them…

Its gross sensationalizing the news… There are more than TV channels and there is little news nowadays… Media has to exaggerate the news and make money out of it… you know how many such open wells are there in UP, Bihar and nearby regions… you know how many kids fall into those wells… you know how many people get killed in these incidents… Still they dont make up the primetime news… This one made it because, the kid was still alive, other TV channels were there gaining mileage… Chief Minister was camped near the rescue site for 30 hours, without discharging his normal duties… Political Mileage…

Once the kid was rescued after 50 hours, which in itself was a very inefficient operation by the army… Chief Minister announces a bonanza of 2 Lakhs for the kid… I am not against giving money… What did the kid do to deserve that money… You and me pay the taxes, which the chief minister spends for his wims and fancies to gain mileage… and yes, Election is around in Haryana within some time…

Media… gives 7 Lakhs to the kid for what ? nothing, just for increasing their TRP ratings… you know how many army personnel die in the field saving our boundaries with our neighbors… how much the media pay them… nothing… because there is nothing sensational in the news… it cannot occupy primetime news and on page – 1 of the print media…

And if there was another MMS on that same day…Prince would have been sidelined to a few seconds of news, even without video…

    Anbudan,

    Anand

P.S: Shubs, it is Neha Dhupia and not mallika sherawat who told that famous quote… Its there in the Complete book of World Famous quotes… Page – 256 😉
